Amy Layzell struck two tries on debut, but Loughborough Lightning were denied a fightback draw at Morson Stadium as Sale Sharks snatched a late winner.
The African Violets trailed 26-12 at the break, with Izzy Clist and Ellie Tromans crossing the line, while Sale worked their way to four scores before half‑time.
Layzell, one of seven Lightning debutants, struck twice in the second period, only for Sale to deliver a late blow that limited Loughborough to a single match point in this JAECOO PWR Next Gen Cup first‑round encounter.
FIRST HALF:
Sale were fastest out of the blocks in the opening ten minutes, striking twice through Holly Thorpe and Freya Aucken, who both found space after strong work from the forwards.
Lightning’s foothold in the game came from a brilliant breakdown steal by Carmela Morrall, from which Ella Barnes punched a kick deep into enemy territory. Sale briefly regained possession before the visitors wrestled it back, and a series of sharp hands allowed Morrall to fix a defender and release Clist on a short burst to the line to mark her debut with a try.
Sale reclaimed their two‑score lead with a weaving infield run from Sophie Hopkins, but Loughborough’s heads did not drop – and on the half‑hour mark, they got themselves firmly back in the contest.
Having halted a Sale breakaway moments earlier with strong rearguard defence, fly‑half Barnes, in just her second Lightning appearance, switched play with a brilliant crossfield kick into space. Tromans went hunting and was first to the ball to finish, and from the touchline Barnes added a superb conversion.
The final word of the half, however, belonged to the Sharks as Lotte Peirsegaele forced her way over from close range.
SECOND HALF:
Lightning narrowed the gap to a converted score ten minutes into the second half with a move that began when replacement prop Tiwaah Adjei‑Ansere tapped and punched a hole. Haineala Lutui kept the defence honest, and the ball was worked wide for Layzell to mark her debut with a neatly taken try. Barnes once again converted from the touchline.
Both teams spurned chances during the 20‑minute spell that followed, until Layzell drew the scores level with a brilliant interception, cantering home from inside her own half and presenting Freya MacColl with a routine conversion.
Sadly, Lightning couldn’t hold onto parity as Sale surged upfield and Thorpe grabbed a late winner, which was converted, before Lizzie Duffy added a penalty to deny the visitors a losing bonus point to accompany their try bonus.
Lightning now have a break week before welcoming Saracens to Goldington Road on Friday 2 October (kick‑off: 7.30pm) — tickets are available by clicking HERE.
