Luthayi: Pressure over perfection key to Lightning’s improved defence versus Tigers

Focusing on pressure rather than perfection was the key to Loughborough Lightning’s much‑improved defensive showing as they ended their JAECOO Next Gen Cup campaign with a victory over Leicester Tigers.

That was the view of centre Molly Luthayi, who – along with her African Violet teammates – managed to keep Tigers pointless for the first hour of the game, forming the foundations of their 24-10 success at Loughborough University on Saturday afternoon.

“Going in at half-time having not conceded any points was a massive win for us,” said Luthayi. “Tails [interim Head Coach Rachel Taylor] always says about defence: it’s pressure over perfection. It’s not always going to be perfect, but not conceding any points is something we chase after in a game. So to get in at the break with the zero intact was a big thing for us.

“The first half in general was really difficult. Tigers cut us off, and we just needed to execute on the edge a bit better. We figured it out, and we came up with a solution as a team.

“I was just delighted to get the win alongside some of my closest friends.”

Having taken a slender 5-0 lead into the break, Lightning struck soon after the restart when Luthayi’s close friend Grace Clifford showcased her strength to muscle her way over from close range.

“I was a bit out of breath from the initial break to get there!” she said. “But I was really pleased for Grace. She is a unique personality, but a great player, and she takes some stopping from there.”

Luthayi was involved in the road‑traffic collision alongside Clifford and former teammates Becky Boyd and Lia Green that temporarily put her career on hold.

The 22‑year‑old featured in all four Cup games last season before helping Loughborough University to a first BUCS Super Rugby Milk Championship title in 21 years.

While happy to be back playing, the powerful centre is keen to muscle her way into contention for JAECOO PWR minutes in the 2026/27 campaign.

“I do love playing here with the girls,” Luthayi explained. “It is such a good team environment with all your friends. Being in and out for so long, it’s just nice to get a proper game in and have a good time.

“I am just really proud to have got back here and be enjoying it with the girls.

“I would obviously love PWR minutes. That comes with working hard and continuing to develop. I don’t want to get stagnant — I want to get better, and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.”
