Lightning scrum-half Meg Davey is eager to get back out on the pitch with her teammates this weekend as the African Violets make the trip north to face Sale Sharks.
Davey is set to return to the Lightning matchday squad eleven weeks after injuring her hand whilst providing the assist for Fancy Bermudez’s crucial try in the final play of the game against Trailfinders Women in December 2025.
Saturday’s Round 13 match is crucial in the Premiership Women’s Rugby end-of-season run-in, with the two teams who will go to battle at Morson Stadium currently tied on 23 points.
“The group has held together really well recently, despite a couple of tough results,” Davey explained. “I’d actually say we’re the most cohesive we’ve ever been.
“We know Sale is never an easy place to go, we’ve talked about the ground probably not being what we’re used to, but it’s never an excuse.
“It’s only been eight weeks since my surgery, and I’m fully on the mend thanks to the physios at Lightning, and I’m glad to be back this weekend. It was tough to sit out. I felt like I had a lot of momentum before I was injured, so it’s been tough, but I’m glad to be back.
“Every week we prepare exactly the same for every team, the competition is of such a high standard in the league, and there are threats everywhere from all over the globe and such a high international standard.”
The scrum-half made her Lightning debut in 2017 as a 17-year-old nd she has remained a consistent presence in the Lightning squad ever since, becoming the Club’s second-ever centurion during the 2024/25 campaign.
The 25-year-old has since moved into uncharted Lightning territory, amassing 118 appearances and is the second-longest serving member of the current squad, and just last week signed a new contract extension to remain with the club.
“I love the club, and I love the girls,” Davey added. “The friendships are so strong, and I’m ambitious to set a legacy here and with the team.
“I love what Nathan [Smith, head coach] does, and if anyone walked into our environment for a day, they’d understand why you’d want to stay around the girls. We are incredibly close.”
As well as a new contract, Davey was also named in Wales’ 45-player extended Six Nations squad for a two-day camp ahead of the 2026 championship, alongside clubmate Kendall Waudby for their first senior international call-ups.
“I have always had an ambition to play internationally,” Davey continued. “I’m incredibly proud to have been called up. I’ve achieved a few milestones with Lightning, which has been amazing, but taking that to the international stage and doing my family and teammates proud is what I’m excited about: that challenge and privilege.
“Being called up alongside Kendall was great, it was a sense of relief as well that I didn’t have to go into camp by myself, and she also fully deserves her international call-up, she’s a great player.”
