Lightning sign Layzell from PWR rivals Harlequins

Loughborough Lightning have bolstered their squad with the signing of Harlequins fullback Amy Layzell.

The former England U20 international provides head coach Nathan Smith with a versatile option in both the back three and centres as his side hunts down a Premiership Women’s Rugby top-four spot.

Layzell’s rugby journey began at hometown club Winchester RFC, and she would go on to represent Hampshire at County level, before playing for Durham University in BUCS Super Rugby.

It was while studying in the north east that Layzell cut her teeth as a teenager in the top flight with three seasons at DMP Sharks. Layzell also spent time with Wasps and then Bristol Bears before starting a two-and-a-half season spell with her most recent club, Harlequins.

“I moved to Loughborough Lightning because I wanted a new challenge in a fresh environment,” said the 24-year-old.

“I’ve loved watching how Loughborough play, and I’m really excited by how much they’ve progressed this season and the huge potential they have going forward.”

Alongside her 15s endeavours, Layzell has gained international honours for Ireland in the Women's 7s Championship Series 2025, and was coached by new Lightning teammate Abbie Brown earlier this year in Dubai, representing the Hammerhead 7s invitational side.

“Hearing about the quality of the environment and the people within the squad really confirmed that Loughborough was the right place for me,” added Layzell.

“I want to contribute to the team in any way I can and help drive us into the top four, where I believe this group really belongs.”

Head coach Nathan Smith was pleased to add an extra player to his squad as he takes his side into the new year just one point outside the PWR play-off places.

“I’m happy to welcome Amy to Lightning,” said Smith. “She provides us with positional versatility, which is always a great asset for me to have as a head coach. Amy also comes to us with experiences she has gained from playing in other environments than our own.

“She’s played with quite a few members of the squad through her age-grade international squad involvements as well as playing Sevens and they all have spoken highly of her as a player, and as a person.”

Lightning’s next two fixtures are away from home against Gloucester-Hartpury (1 February) and Exeter Chiefs (15 February). Layzell’s home debut could come against Bristol Bears when they visit cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens on Sunday 22 February (kick-off: 3pm) – discounted Early Bird tickets are available now priced from £10* adult and £3* child by clicking HERE.
