Loughborough University final win

Match Report: Brunel University 5-45 Loughborough University

Amelia Williams’ first-half hat-trick propelled Loughborough University to their first BUCS Super Rugby Milk Championship Final success since 2005, defeating Brunel University in emphatic fashion.

The Loughborough Lightning prop crossed in the seventh, 15th and 35th minutes to set the African Violets on their way, with Tamsin Baynes also touching down and Ella Barnes adding three first-half conversions.

After falling at the final hurdle in each of the past two seasons, there was to be no heartbreak this time. Despite a spirited Brunel fightback after the break, Loughborough’s victory was sealed when Baynes claimed her second try of the evening before Ashton Adcock and Sarah Shrestha added late scores to round off a dominant performance at Rodney Parade.

FIRST HALF

It didn’t take long for Loughborough’s pack to exert their dominance, shunting Brunel off their own scrum  ball to gain early field position. Although Brunel scrambled well to reclaim possession, Shrestha pounced to steal it back five metres out. Kaya Acton went agonisingly close to opening the scoring but was held up; Williams, however, made no mistake, sniping from close range for a seventh‑minute lead.

Openside flanker Shrestha was central again moments later, bursting upfield and linking with co‑captain Ellie Roberts, only for a promising attack to break down with a handling error out wide.

Brunel defended resolutely in the face of some powerful carries — particularly from England U21 forward Baynes, who made her Lightning debut in their most recent fixture before the international break against Trailfinders Women. But once again it was Williams who unlocked the defence, finishing smartly from close range.

Barnes’ second successful conversion opened a 14‑point gap inside the opening quarter.

Loughborough’s set-piece continued to function with ruthless efficiency, with their lineout providing further attacking platforms. Sustained pressure eventually told as Baynes muscled over on the half-hour mark, before Williams completed her treble five minutes before the break from a tapped penalty under the posts. Barnes’ third conversion stretched the lead to 26 points at half-time.

SECOND HALF

Brunel grew into the contest after the restart, keeping ball in hand and reducing their error count. A series of penalties marched them upfield, and they finally registered their points entering the final third when Lily Olliffe snuck over from close range.

Isy Tigger’s rampaging run just after the hour threatened to narrow the gap further, but a superb piece of breakdown work from Sasha Roberts earned a crucial penalty metres from her own line.

Having weathered Brunel’s strongest spell, Loughborough reasserted control entering the final quarter. Baynes delivered the decisive blow, fending off a defender before stretching out to complete her brace.

The celebrations could begin in earnest with five minutes remaining when replacement scrum-half Adcock spotted a gap and darted over under the posts. Shrestha — outstanding throughout — capped her performance with a powerful late finish, while Barnes added her fifth successful conversion to wrap up a memorable victory.
