Sadia Kabeya awarded MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List

Loughborough Lightning and England star Sadia Kabeya has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List.

The 23-year-old played a starring role for the Red Roses as they emerged victorious in their home Rugby World Cup, and was awarded Player of the Match in September’s final victory over Canada at Allianz Stadium.

Under-pinning her success on the international stage has been Kabeya’s remarkable form in club colours for Loughborough Lightning.

Her 2025 started with a try in Lightning’s first-ever victory over Saracens back in January. Since returning from the World Cup, Kabeya has scored five tries in her last seven games – including a brace in their most recent draw against Trailfinders Women.

An MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, is the third-highest rank within the Order of the British Empire, below OBE and CBE.

Lightning coach Emily Scarratt, who was part of the squad that won the World Cup to add to her success in 2014, was awarded an MBE in 2021.

Alongside Kabeya, Red Roses Head Coach John Mitchell, captain Zoe Stratford (née Aldcroft) and double Rugby World Cup winner Marlie Packer will receive OBEs, as well as teammates Meg Jones and Ellie Kildunne, also being recognised with MBEs.

On the awards, RFU Chief Executive Bill Sweeney said: “On behalf of everyone at the RFU, I would like to congratulate all those who have been honoured. Each played an integral role during a defining year for women’s rugby in this country, and the recognition they have received is thoroughly deserved.”
